I have no idea. I’m pretty sure there’s gonna be some loveline eventually but so far there hasn’t even been a whiff of it.
Bona is playing older (as is Go Won Hee) – someone in her late 20′s – whereas Ha Suk Jin is playing his age (mid-thirties). So on paper it’s less… skeevy, and probably not worth a mention. But irl a 36-year-old and a 22-year-old are just… sigh…
my friend told me that he thought I’d be the final girl in a horror movie and honestly I think the new trend should be complimenting your friends by telling them what tv trope they remind you of
I’m so sorry for all of the spam of the handsome oppa. *laughs* When I started reblogging the Kim Jae Wook posts, it was only because I was searching for one post (one of the gif sets from Temperature of Love) and ended up finding a bunch of other ones. ^^;
The truth is, I’m not much into dramas myself, usually. I watch them when I’m interested, but sometimes I just put them on for background noise. Kdramas have a knack for making me cry, so I don’t watch a lot of them because I don’t want to get sucked in and end up crying all the time. It’s emotionally draining. *laughs* The other part to them (and most Jdramas as well) is that they are FULL of pop idols. When I lived in Japan, watching Gokusen 2 was kind of fun because of all the pretty boys, but I’ve just never been much into boybands. I even told Joule before that “fangirling” has never really been one of my standard modes. Yeah, I thought Nick Carter (from the Backstreet Boys) was cute when I was in high school, but I was more of a Blur and Oasis fan at the time.
So how is Kim Jae Wook different? Well… First you kind of have to look at my three favorite actors: Tom Hiddleston, Benedict Cumberbatch, and David Tennant. All three are tall. All three are intelligent. All three are a bit more on the leanside… which I like to refer to as the “Spiderman build”. All three look damn fine in a suit. But, most importantly, all three are extremely excellent, talented actors. Kim Jae Wook possesses all of those qualities as well.
Back when Joule was watching the OCN crime drama Voice, he was telling me about how good the series was (since he’s not much into romantic fluff series). Then halfway through, the killer is introduced. Towards the end of the series, Joule told me more and more about the actor who played the killer. Kim Jae Wook, despite playing a sadistic psychopath, is extremely charismatic in his role. From the moment his character is introduced, you can tell that he’s the killer. You also end up feeling very conflicted because he charms you like a snake. He is talking to a very fidgety, nervous character when he’s introduced. After he’s finished talking, he blinks, and the other person is calmed. It’s like a spell. And I think that’s sometimes one of the most dangerous types of villains: The one that is likable and you enjoy watching, even when you know he’s killing people.
I definitely recommend Voice if you enjoy crime dramas or thrillers. Even without Kim Jae Wook in part of the series, it is very high action and suspense with plenty of cliffhangers, plus two very good main characters: Mad Dog and Kang Kwon Joo. Joule also showed me a scene from another Kim Jae Wook drama Who Are You. Even without subtitles or not knowing much of what was going on, I ended up crying!!! *laughs* I don’t know how much that’s worth though. One recent popular one is Temperature of Love, which I’m curious about, but I’m not sure when I’ll get the chance to watch it. He has a new drama series coming up where he’ll play an exorcist (I think?? Joule knows more about it than I do. ^^) that I would like to watch when it comes out.
Kim Jae Wook is kind of known for playing the second male lead in dramas and his fans really want him to be a lead. I think his choices are intentional though. If you look at the roles he’s been in, they seem like more of a challenge than just being the handsome lead who always gets the girl. I think that may be why I like him so much. ^^
Yeeeesssssssssssssss.
You get extra love, OP, because I see you tagged the post “handsome oppa.”
One of the assignments for our diversity training was to write down how people see you or what they assume about you versus all the things they can’t automatically see/assume, and I realized I had no idea how people perceive me and was only coming up with only vague ideas (gender/age/etc).
Like… I care about what people think (everyone please love me!)… but I also kinda don’t care about what people think, provided they just let me live my life and don’t bother me.
Then I realized that’s pretty privileged, to just be invisible and not be hassled by anyone because of who I am.
(But it did make me spiral into a mini-existential crisis because I realized I didn’t know how to define myself. Still don’t, tbh.)
I opened a new body wash today that I’ve never used before, and have spent the better part of the day wondering whose lotion or perfume smells so vanilla-tropical, only to realize that it’s me. 😂
EDIT: actually now I’m thinking that it’s the new hand soap I also opened today! (Can you tell I went to Target this weekend?) It’s only my hands and arms that are overly scented, which is a good thing because it’s much cheaper deciding a small 80 cent bottle of soap smells too strong versus a 4 dollar 18oz bottle needs to be trashed. (Yes, I’m cheap and buy store brands.)
Are You Human Too? – this was only vaguely on the potential “watch” list so I have no regrets that it hasn’t been squeezed into my schedule.
Why Secretary Kim – I didn’t think I’d be drawn to it, and I was right.
Upcoming dramas of interest:
Your House Helper – I feel like this one could have some potential, since I really liked this writer’s previous work (Strongest Deliveryman) and this could be comfortably within that genre. Ha Suk Jin always seems to play the same kind of gruff uptight guy that will probably work well for this role, but I’m hoping for something different from him.
Risky Romance – I love Lee Si Young but there’s nothing else about this that especially seems compelling.
Thirty But Seventeen – some instinctive side-eye about the concept of an adult having a childlike mentality due to tragedy, but I feel like if this is handled in the appropriate manner, it could be really good. Even so, there’s such a huge margin of error that I’m not sure if I can trust a sticom writer to appropriately deal with it.
Time – I generally like time travel shenanigans but I also know this writer skews more melo than my attention span can appreciate. I’m vaguely interested, but realistically I will probably not watch it.
Life – I feel like the odd duck who only liked Secret Forest and didn’t feel the need to give it my entire soul, so I’m only moderately interested in this one (especially since it’s a power struggle at a hospital, which I feel like I’ve seen a zillion times before). At least the directors have done some of my favorite shows so if nothing else it’ll be visually pleasing. But I swear if another amazing woman gets unnecessarily fridged, this writer and I are through.
Dear Judge – not in the cult, but I like mistaken identity/twin hijinks, so this could have some potential. The production team is a little iffy and I haven’t figured out if this is skewing more dramatic or comedic. Plus it’s a legal drama. But like I said, it has potential, and I’m happy to keep my eye on it and see if it’s worth squeezing into the schedule.
My ID is Gangnam Beauty – I don’t know anything about the webtoon, so I have no idea if this will be a sweet slice-of-life “don’t judge a person by their looks” or if it’ll be a comedy or what, but I’m not feeling drawn to it despite it airing on the usually trustworthy JTBC.
Mr. Sunshine – nooooooooo, I don’t want to watch another KES drama ever again! But those pics of Byun Yo Han in period clothing got me shook so I don’t know what I’m going to do. *cries*
Let’s Eat 3 – I will probably watch this and hate myself because I can’t resist Goo Dae Young’s chatterbox charm and the promise of food porn. It’d at least better have more appetizing meals than season 2. And if they try to cram in yet another romance for Dae Young, well, I’m just going to continue to create an elaborate plot about Soo Kyung noona having the most amazing life ever and avoiding the headache of falling in love with an insurance salesman foodie playboy. Soo Kyung noona doesn’t need anything except amazing food! And Barasshi! So there!
As always, any drama not listed means I have nothing new to add since the last mention and/or it’s not something I care about enough to add to the list.
I just booked the cutest little place for my Paris trip! Yay! I’m excited to go back and visit all the museums I didn’t have time for last time (and revisit some old faves). Plus eat lots of delicious food, of course!
Just wanted to give y’all a “thanks” because we started a diversity awareness training at work today and I was already familiar with most of the terms and concepts just by being here for years.
So thanks for being awesome people who are always striving for inclusion and to educate people on how to do better.
