Hey Anon, I didn’t mean to ignore you – I was going to go back to the episode and check but then realized that I never will (these eps are so looooooong), so all I can say is ¯_(ツ)_/¯

I simply LOVED the 1st episode of Prison Playbook, but I’m in a moment of my life in which I can’t spend circa 1 hour and 42 minutes watching one drama episode :( I’m so sad because I was also surprised that I could like something with so few women on it + I really like the story. Main lead gives all the possible Sseureki vibes and I can even say he is good looking in his own way? I guess it’s because he seems to be a really good man, I don’t know, maybe I’m just blabbering right now!
…are you my secret twin, Anon? Because I, too, balk at the long episode lengths (it literally takes me two days to watch one episode), and also can’t believe I’ve fallen in love with a show that has so few women. I love the story, though, especially the natural Shin PD way of interweaving the expectations we have of the characters based on our first introductions to them with the stories of their pasts and what they’re really like.
Just like Je Hyuk, I keep forgetting that everyone in the prison is there for a reason, and just because I’m delighted by their quirky personalities, doesn’t mean that they haven’t done something truly horrible to end up there. But I love that each character continues to defy expectations (like Warden Paeng – omg if you haven’t seen ep 4 yet, then I’m sorry, but he’s now one of my favorites).
I also really love Joon Ho and the way he protects his clueless friend without trying to make it look like that’s what he’s doing. It makes me wonder if he ever regrets his choice to not go through rehab after the car accident, since he was the better ball player and had the best chance of making a full recovery. (Also I’d forgotten how much I like Jung Kyung Ho as an actor because it’s been so long since I’ve watched him in anything.)
But then it makes Je Hyuk’s issue all the more heartbreaking, because he’s obviously the type who will stubbornly and patiently work through any obstacle, even returning to baseball despite the odds against his surgery being successful. But now, thanks to prison, his hope is gone. The one thing he’s worked so hard for all his life is taken from him. He has nothing to return to after he gets out of prison, which breaks my heart and is why I teared up (and also wanted to cheer, if that makes sense) when he was like “no, I’ll go to the church service” because he wanted to scream. Unnhhhhh, my heart.
Those first four episodes were super long and told us so much, but I feel like we’re only just getting started on his story.
(Hey, look, I can babble, too!)
(ALSO NO ONE SPOIL ME ON ANYTHING PAST EPISODE 4 YET OR I WILL SHANK YOU!)
How much did it cost to go to Korea?! And how long did you stay? And what did you do?
Hi Anon!
I can’t remember exactly how much it cost. I do remember I got a decent fare on the flight because Delta had recently started direct flights from Seattle to Seoul, so the flight from my city to Seattle and then to Seoul was about $800. These days that same flight runs about $1200. Depending on where you live, you could probably find cheaper flights, but this one is still a pretty good deal for where I live.
Ummmm… then I’d say it was another couple of thousand for everything else. I was there two weeks (15 days, maybe?), and half of that time was me wandering around on my own in the city, and the other half I joined a group so I could see more of the country without the stress of figuring out train/bus schedules/getting lost. I stayed at pretty decent hotels and didn’t exactly scrimp/save, although I didn’t spend much on souvenirs except for a few hundred thousand won on a handmade tea set and, of course, a ton of beauty products. I’d say roughly $3000 for everything, maybe a little more because I had some unexpected splurges on beauty products – it just depends on how cheap you want to go on things like hotels and food (I’m not a hostel kind of girl – I need my space and privacy!).
As for my itinerary, I spent the first few days just wandering Seoul, going to whatever was in walking distance of Namdaemun Gate (which is a ton of things). Lots of window shopping at Myeongdong, wandering Namdaemun market (so cramped and fascinating), going to the nearby palaces and gardens, eating delicious things, and trying to get over my jet lag. Then I joined a tour group for about a week where we went to the DMZ, Mt Seorak, Daegu, Busan, Gyeongju, Haeinsa (and a ton of other temples), plus a few other places I’ve momentarily forgotten. It was nice to get out of the city and visit places that I recognized from 1N2D.
Then I spent another few days on my own in Seoul, near Insadong (which I loved visiting every day!), going to museums, the Han river, Hongdae, Dongdaemun, and doing all the shopping I’d put off since I didn’t want to lug it around. I also just enjoyed walking around or hanging out a coffee shop and taking in the vibe of the place, which is one of my favorite things to do in cities just in general.
Even so, there’s a lot of stuff I didn’t see or do (and a lot of food I didn’t eat because so many dishes I wanted to try are for more than one person and I just wasn’t brave enough to be the “weird American” and order them, anyway). I also didn’t try to jam my schedule full – only a couple of “destinations” a day, the rest just wandering and seeing what I came across, or enjoying a lazy morning in with no major agenda except to get lunch (hey, I’m on holiday!).
Hope this somehow helps. Sorry it took me awhile to respond – thanks for your patience! ^_^
i recommend you watch ‘because this is my first life’ (이번 생은 처음이라)– i can’t guarantee you’ll like it, but i’m suggesting it because i think there’s a good chance you will. others may see it differently, but i found the first two episodes really impressive in addressing cultural norms, gender roles, and self-reflection/development. kind of like misaeng, but not nearly as emo and serious (yet, at least)
I’m glad you’re enjoying it! And I fully plan to watch it, but I can only live-watch one or two dramas at a time, unless I want to leave partially-watched dramas scattered in my easily distracted wake. For dramas I want to watch and actually finish it’s best I wait until they’re completed because I rarely lose momentum when binging.
Can you please recommend some dramas with funny male leads?
Humor is subjective but I’ll do my best:
- History of a Salaryman
- Protect the Boss
- Flower Boy Next Door
- When It’s At Night
- Sly and Single Again
- Super Family 2017
- Hong Gil Dong (2008)
- Flower Grandpa Investigation Team
I don’t think I watch enough comedies to really give a lot of recommendations. I can think of a lot of funny actors, but often they’re in semi-serious dramas but allowed to have their humorous moments. Or I can think of tons of funny secondary or third characters, but my mind goes blank when it comes to the lead.
Asian drama asks ~ 6, 8, 28, 40, and 59? (:
6: K-Drama NOTP(s)?
I already answered this but I’m sure I can come up with another one. Ummm… Soo Young and Min Suk from High School King of Savvy.
8: First drama you considered your favorite?
Coffee Prince, probably
28: Favorite K-Drama friendship?
Only one? Hmmm, lately my definition of friendship would be the trio of amazing women from Fantastic.
40: Kim Seul Gi or Kim Go Eun?
Uhhhh, do you see my user icon?
59: Tell a random story involving K-Dramas
LollyPip (aka LP as I refer to her here) and I met when she emailed me her phone number before we started working on Witch’s Romance, and I was like, “hey, that area code is awfully familiar…” (Not that you can put much faith in area codes since people move so much.) It turned out, however, she only lived about a half-hour from me at the time. What are the odds of that? LP’s since moved further away but it’s kind of neat that dramas helped me make an IRL friend.
What drama are you watching (and are on ep 4?)
Duel.
I can’t say more bc spoilers and also I’m about to say, like, 4000 words on it so don’t want to waste any more rn.
Oh I love Suspicious Partner. The chemistry between the leads is great. And I love the female character. She’s bold, smart and cute. She’s strong and feminine but she doesn’t hesitate to show her weakness either. And Nam Ji Hyun is a great actress. It’s nice sometimes to have a girl who doesn’t act like a “vierge effarouchée”…
Yeah, it seems like a lot of people are enjoying it. I just haven’t seen any kind of specific thing that would tip me over into “omg must watch this now!”
Hi, Have you seen The Big Hit drama trailer (directed by Yoo PD & Cha Tae Hyun). Are you planning on watching that?
No, because I don’t really bother with teasers for shows I already know I want to watch. (So “yes” on the second question.)
Whoa, you are a really big fan of Jughead’s dad. I confess it’s getting kinda hard to not ship him with Alice after all these youtube videos of them young using the past projects of the actors.
I love Skeet, even though I’m probably the only one who’s never seen him in Scream (I don’t do scary movies, okay? Not even tongue-in-cheek ones).
I first saw him in the made-for-tv Hallmark movie The Magic of Ordinary Days, and he was so perfect and wonderful and I loved him. Then I saw Jericho and realized it was the same guy and loved him again.
Then I forgot alllllllllllll about him until he surprised me by suddenly showing up on Riverdale. Honestly, considering the cast they’ve selected for all the parents, I think I’d love to somehow rewind time and watch their younger selves in a version of Riverdale. I think I’d probably like it a whole lot more than being offended at the way the show has messed around with characters that have been beloved since my childhood.
And you’ve just reminded me that I still haven’t watched the last episode.
