I noticed you said Hwarang is one of the dramas youre watching right now and I’m currently up to episode 4.. and I honestly have no idea what’s going on.. like why is the king being hidden, why are they opposed to Hwarang, why Hwarang, and such ???

My historical knowledge is not the greatest but I’ll do my best. Keep in mind the historical setting is familiar to those who’ve grown up having to study it (and Park Hyung Sik’s character will eventually become a very famous and influential king).

The queen is still regent because the king was too young when he ascended the throne, and he’s in hiding because, originally, she was worried he would be assassinated since there’s a strong contingent that are against this royal lineage and want to put someone else on the throne. They’re opposed to Hwarang because it’s a foundation for trying to get the various factions to work together in unity and support the throne (which may not be exactly what you want if you’re against the person currently sitting on the throne right now).

Hwarang is based on actual historical figures – essentially elite “knights” who studied art, culture, religion (helped to establish Buddhism as the main religion), martial arts, and sports. They’re also historically considered to be the “beautiful elite” so you can see why someone was like “hey let’s make a drama that’s all about ridiculously pretty guys.” Even though the show definitely takes license, honestly it’s not too far off with the idea that these pretty aristocrats were schooled together (and probably got up to some shenanigans).

Also of note is the “bone rank system” which explains why Park Seo Joon’s character gets bullied so much (since he – pretending to be Lee Kwang Soo’s character – is thought to be half “true bone” and half commoner, and not worthy enough in his lineage to be a true part of this elite aristocratic group). You’ll see the bone ranking brought up quite frequently, so it’s a good thing to understand.

I love your blog! <3 (And FBND) Since you are watching Solomon's Perjury, I was wondering what your favourite thing about the show is, and your greatest complaint about it, so far?

Awwwwww, thanks!

I think what I love most about Solomon’s Perjury is that the students actually feel like teenagers. Yes, there’s been a death, and other trauma, and they’ve decided to take everything into their hands because the adults with authority have disappointed them. But they still get to have moments of doubt and of cuteness in the midst of the seriousness. There’s stress about their tests and about friendships online. It just all feels more real to me than a lot of high schools shows. I also love that the parental relationships – even the dysfunctional ones – feel real and grounded, too. Of course I love Seo Yeon’s parents the best (her mother continues to delight me), but all of the parents feel more than just caricatures, even when I disagree with them.

What I like least? Hmmmm. Honestly, I don’t have a lot of complaints. Not that it’s a perfect drama (what is?), but it’s very satisfying. As real as the show feels, though, I think I’m still bummed that there was a truck of doom. I really loved Cho Rong and I wish she could be doing more than just be in a coma. Also if the show doesn’t reveal that So Woo and Ji Hoon were secretly dating, I’mma call shenanigans.

what are your thoughts on the reaper goblin pair

I love them.

They’ve earned the “totally married” tag for whatever ends up in my queue.

I feel like you might be seeking a more indepth answer but honestly I don’t have the capability to give this drama my full attention so I don’t have any more thoughts than “these two bickering supernatural dumbs who need each other.” I know, thanks to foolishly going into the Lee Dong Wook tag before I’ve watched the last two episodes, that their bromance reaches a hiccup due to Reaper’s past life as the king (*shakes fist at KES for not going with my pet theory*), buuuuuuuuuuut honestly I don’t really care. I probably ought to, but all this drama has instilled in me is an earnest desire for a Reaper spin-off that’s basically just an office drama.

Hi. Why do you think Joon Young’s mum is mentally ill?

The way she manipulates her family by playing the victim and then bullying them, and how father and son have had to tiptoe around her to avoid her breaking out into one of her moods. Joon Young found the body in the first place because he’d rather go to school early than listen to his parents fight, and their fight (at least what we heard of it) was mostly her making herself into the victim (”I want a divorce” and “maybe I should just die then”) while Dad tried to get her to calm down. She blames all her troubles on her son. Her response to the news that Joon Young was going to be in the trial was to try and destroy his things, and it didn’t look like it was the first time (which is backed up by the fact you could hear her destroying something breakable in one of her previous fights). It wasn’t exactly a healthy reaction (anger, yes – the destructive way she went about expressing it, no). Maybe she has a good reason for treating her son like dirt beneath her shoe, and maybe she is genuinely sick with a physical ailment, but I feel like she must have some sort of personality disorder, perhaps on the borderline spectrum.

I found out what the song is called! It’s Only Human by Stephen Boyd and it’s from his album 80’s. But I cannot for the life of me find it anywhere online.

OMG thank you! It’s a real song that exists!

With that info, I discovered it’s on iTunes (US), but yeah, I can’t seem to find any other online presence.

Did you ever find out what song was playing in episode 2 of Valid Love with the lyrics It hurts the way you got me loving you. My world’s upside down and I’m scared of the truth? The song came on in an episode of Terrace House and when I googled the song lyrics your question from a while ago was the first link.

Nope, it remains a mystery.

But knowing that it’s popped up in another tv show, maybe one day we’ll finally figure it out. I’m vaguely betting that it has something to do with licensing issues, but I’d still like to know the original artist.

idk if you are still following Sisters Slam Dunk but i’m enjoying it a lot (the ladies are a riot!) and i’ve been keeping an eye out for Cute PD because of you, and i must report that he is very Soft and has a very gentle voice and he cries a lot when the ladies cry (like he simply CANNOT bring himself to be actually mean to any of them) and this one time he wore glasses and it was super cute. that’s all :)

Anooooooon I’m sorry this took so long but I’m happy to have made someone else aware of the always adorable Cute PD and I really, really need to get caught up (especially since I saw half of an episode this week and I want to know what their new mission is that involves Minhyuk!).
