For the anon who was asking about jump scares, I’ve made a list of all the ones I can remember.
Non-spoiler: any time the camera focuses for at least a few seconds on a place where there might be (or is) a ghost, just assume there’s going to be something that might cause you to jump. Also if jump scares are an issue, don’t see it in 3D since it seems most of the startling moments are an excuse for 3D gimmicks.
SPOILERS below the cut w/ more detailed explanations in chronological order:
- Door handle jiggles and the tour guide stares at it, there’s a scream that’s meant to be startling
- Erin starts to introduce herself to the Gertrude Aldridge ghost, that’s seconds before the ghost gets scary face and projectile vomits ectoplasm
- When Patty finds the subway ghost, he’s still for a few seconds, then suddenly lunges
- Possessed mannequin chases Patty into the costume room, then suddenly kicks down the door
- Martin Heiss mockingly says “hi Casper” which is when the demon ghost busts outta the container
- Freaked out Abby in the bathroom, Rowan ecto goo from sink drain comes flying towards the camera
- The ladies stare at the food cart and then Slimer pops up
- The Times Square battle has quite a few possibly – but a lot of it is more standard “action surprise” than what I’d really consider a jump scare, although when the ghosts first line up there’s one that comes rushing towards the camera (which is why I wouldn’t recommend 3D)
- I can’t seem to recall any after that, but if I’ve forgotten any, someone please let me know!
Honestly, it’s pretty light on the jump scares – there’s just a couple I think are truly startling (Gertrude and then the “hi Casper” demon ghost moment) – so even wimps like me can manage quite well just by trusting that “oh crap we’re focusing on something where a ghost might pop out” feeling because yeah a ghost is gonna pop out but hey I was ready!
