Kim Jaewook as Mo Taegoo in Voice
Tag: ocn voice
Handsome oppa interview with Viki was fun but also frustrating: the questions weren’t really related to his acting. I wanted to know how he approached Mo Tae Gu, how he related to him, what’s his view on the past of this character, on his relationship with his father, what does he think of the attraction he had for Kwang Joo? Maybe it has been asked in other korean interviews, which haven’t been translated, but it feels like he’s still considered as a sexy man rather than an rising actor
Mmmm, he’s had lots of other interviews (all in Korean, obviously) but this is a translated one that touches on how he felt about the character and the drama.
Here are some other interviews that are in Korean but that I thought were good and discussed his thoughts on the character (and other things), if anyone wants to try and muddle through them: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9
Some brief points, based on your questions above:
- He was given a lot of freedom to interpret the character and drew inspiration from Christian Bale’s character in American Psycho.
- He was not particularly sympathetic with his character, since Tae-gu was a murderous psychopath, but did want to approach the character in a way that would make him seem charismatic and belonging to the upper-class.
- He wanted to make sure Tae-gu’s personal philosophy was clear so it didn’t just seem like another random lunatic (referencing the Joker from The Dark Knight as an example).
- He was satisfied with the ending and scoffs at the idea of returning for another season because Tae-gu is dead (yes, according to him and the production staff, the ending was literal and not a hallucination), but thinks Voice could have another season with a new villain.
- While I don’t recall any specific mention of his thoughts on Tae-gu’s childhood or father (except he was grateful to have scenes with Lee Do Kyung, because so often his scenes were shot where he was alone), there was one interview where he said he warned his actual parents not to watch the drama so they wouldn’t be disturbed by seeing their son brutally kill people.
- Any chemistry between Tae-gu and Kwon-joo during that last rooftop scene was by accident – he was just focused on portraying the emotion of his character.
The point of that Viki interview wasn’t to be hard-hitting or in-depth (after all, it’s Viki) – it was just for fun. I was most delighted when they asked about his kitty and pup (and one of those interviews mentions somewhere that if he had the ability to hear sounds like on Voice, he’d like to be a pet detective and reunite lost animals with their families).

This is a very good interview, yes, very good.
Watch: Kim Jae Wook Tells All About His “Voice” Blood Bath, Raising Cats And Dogs, And More
Dramaland Forecast: April 2017
Previously: 2016 – Jan – Feb – Mar
Completed:
- Voice – not quite a perfect drama (so many logical fails, questionable police work, and a waste of potential character development), but gripping throughout its entire run, which is pretty impressive for a crime drama. Plus, y’know, Handsome Oppa makes everything better.
Currently watching:
- Super Family 2017 – my darling show that has yet to disappoint. <3<3<3<3
- Radiant Office – I’m insisting I’m just here for the Suicide Squad and the wonderful Go Ah Sung, but Hobaby’s noona romance has suddenly taken over my life with an OTP I never expected but now is everything I want.
- Tunnel – I don’t know if I’ll stick with this one, but if I do, it’ll be because of the bickering “Odd Couple” begrudging partnership of Yoon Hyun Min and Choi Jin Hyuk. At least, that’s what I’m hoping they’ll become.
Skipping/dropping:
- Strong Woman Bong Do Soon – noped out of this one in ep 4 and haven’t looked back.
- Perfect Wife – I didn’t intentionally drop this one, I just forgot I watched the first episode (which I really enjoyed!) and that this show even exists. I’d like to go back to it one day, since I think it had great potential. It’ll be added to my never-ending “marathon on a rainy day” list.
Upcoming dramas of interest:
- Mystery Queen – I’ve had a vague eye on this one based on the concept of a mystery-loving ahjumma housewife finally getting a chance to solve cases. Even though my drama plate is full right now, I think I’ll still make time to at least check out the premiere, although I don’t really have space to add anything to the live-watch list.
- Third Rate My Way – there isn’t enough on this show yet for me to decide how close attention I’ll pay to it, but the cast is promising (Kim Ji Won in her first leading role! Kim Sung Oh on my screen again!) and it’s from the writer of Baek Hee Has Returned, so my hopes for it are continually rising.
- The Best Hit – this is another attempt at that “variety drama” format as seen in the initial few episodes of Producer, which I personally loved and wished had been extended throughout the entire show. That’s the main reason I plan to check it out, although I’m also excited that this will be Cha Tae Hyun’s first directorial challenge and he’ll be working alongside my fave 1N2D PD, Yoo Ho Jin. It’s still a drama, I swear! But this holds promise that the show will actually keep to a more “variety” feel. Even though I’m not in the “cult,” I’m sure there are those who are also excited that Yoon Si Yoon will be in another leading role.
- My Secret Romance – there’s nothing so far that makes this seem any different from the zillions of rom-coms that have gone before, but it is OCN’s first attempt to crack the rom-com market, and so I think I’m interested due to pure curiosity since OCN is more known for their excellent crime/thriller/mystery programming.
- Lookout – the cast is what caught my attention on this one: Lee Si Young! Kim Seul Gi! Kim Tae Hoon! My SHINee bias Key! Shin Dong Wook! I’m not the hugest fan of Kim Young Kwang, though, even if I’m suddenly wondering if Lee Si Young is attempting to work with all the model-actors.
- Bad Thief, Good Thief – I’m not one to watch 50-episode weekend dramas, but knowing my girl Im Joo Eun means I’m keeping an eye on it. I still probably won’t watch just because I know my attention span limits, but I hope it’s a good role for her.
- Circle – Kim Kang Woo and aliens. I’m already sold.
- Woman of Dignity – finally has a channel (JTBC) and an airdate (June, after Man to Man). Buuuuuuuuut knowing it’s written by the same person as Strong Woman Bong Do Soon (see above), I’m super wary, even though I adore Kim Sun Ah and was really hoping for redemption after the disaster of Masked Prosecutor. I’ll probably still check it out just for her, but I’ll be cautious about any expectations for the actual script.
As always, any drama not listed means I have nothing new to add since the last mention and/or it’s not something I care about enough to add to the list.
this should be illegal 😡
Kim Jae Wook in the final episode of Voice
Mo tae goo
Hi, thank you for your last answer about handsome oppa. I’m glad that you liked his role in Voice. I think it’s the best he ever had and personally the only one in which i enjoyed his acting. He was really the best actor for playing Mo Tae Gu. Speaking of the devil, I’m curious about one more thing: what is your favourite scene (if you have one) for this character? For the other leads?
Ahhh, good question, although I’ll probably struggle to answer because I’m a love’em & leave’em kind of girl so I’ve already forgotten a ton about this show even though it’s barely been a week.
As for Tae-gu’s most memorable scene, hmm… how shallow would I be to say it’s whenever he’s in the bath? Kidding! Kinda… Honestly, probably just about anything from the last couple of episodes would do, especially when he finally got to act in the same room as everyone else. Probably his stand-off with Jin-hyuk as Jin-hyuk threatened him to shoot.
For Kwon-joo, ahhhhh, it’s hard to decide, since honestly a lot of her scenes run together for me since so much of the time she was in the call center talking to everyone over the radio. But the moment she had to break the news about Choon-ok’s death to her brother had a lot of understated emotion in it, which is all thanks to the lovely Lee Ha Na.
For Jin-hyuk, I’ll forever adore that lowkey scene when he’s like, “hey, we all make mistakes, don’t beat yourself up about it. I forgive you.” I can’t even remember what case it was, but it was somewhere in the middle, and Kwon-joo was super apologetic that she had heard wrong. It was such a small moment, but it meant a lot to me when it came to figuring out his character, and it felt like the tipping point of their working relationship when he went from angrily thinking she let his wife’s killer get away to deciding that he was finally going to trust her and treat her with respect as a coworker and boss.
For Dae-shik, no question, the scene in ep 15 where Jin-hyuk confronts him about being the mole. Baek Sung Hyun was phenomenal in that scene.
Even though there was woefully not enough of Hyun-ho and Eun-soo, and what we did get was mostly wasted exposition and PPL, I loved their first meeting when she shut him down and was willing to report him for sexual harassment because he wanted to know how to hit on girls in Russian. I think I also loved that scene because it gives me the sensation of what dynamic these two characters could have had if only the writer had allowed a little more opportunity for character development. Although Yesung with the puppy deserves a little love, even if it wasn’t necessary to the actual plot. But it was dang cute.
OCN has released two hour-long specials for Voice! I know what I’m gonna be watching when I get home from work today.
