Loving the visual effect of the vamp vision.

Also I love that our heroes seek medical treatment at a (really cool looking!) tattoo parlor. I can’t wait until we get the full backstory between Oh Jung Se’s character and Dr Tattoo Artist.

Ooooohhhhh, I think I’ve discovered why y’all were peppering me with questions. Good luck to anyone applying! I did it on a fluke just for fun, without seriously considering they’d accept me, and I definitely didn’t think that *poof* it’d be a couple years later and I’d have a new srs bzns hobby.

Just goes to show you never know what will happen when you try something on a whim. (…that almost sounds ominous, doesn’t it?)

Anyway, good luck, y’all!

For the first time in at least two weeks, I was actually able to leave work on time. I should take advantage of this unexpected gift of an extra couple of hours (because I’ve grown to assume I won’t leave at my scheduled time) to do something productive, but instead I’m eating ice cream and watching 1N2D without shame or guilt.

It’s my Friday, yo. Responsibilities can wait until tomorrow.

Cute PD’s new variety show, Unni Slam Dunk, premieres April 8th, and lookit how cute (and fun!) this cast is. The concept of the show is having the chance to do those things the women never got to do when they are younger, which definitely leaves it wide open for interpretation. But knowing the PD’s and the cast that is filled with comedians and characters, there will be lots of laughter along the way. Mostly I’m just excited to have a variety show with an all female cast.

The official teaser is here, and I’m just assuming it’s a send-up of DotS since KBS obviously would want to capitalize on their show with the highest ratings. Also Cute PD is working his 1N2D connections. (Hey, if this ends up essentially being a female version of 1N2D, I certainly won’t complain!)

Kim Seo Hyung has been confirmed for The Good Wife, She’ll be playing the Diane Lockhart role and I AM SO EXCITE.

My favorite roles of hers have been Secretary (turned villain) Mo Ga Bi from History of a Salaryman and the Empress Dowager from Empress Ki, so I’m confident that this role will be ideal for her. So much so, in fact, that I’m suddenly unable to think of anyone else I’d want to play the tough-but-fair law firm partner.

Casting as been spot-on so far, and I’m eager to hear who they’ll cast for the other roles (especially for my darling Kalinda).

Friendly reminder for those of you who don’t have access to VIU (and who don’t prefer to download shows), that KBS World will be hosting English subbed episodes of Neighborhood Lawyer Jo Deul Ho (aka My Lawyer Mr Jo) on their youtube channel starting Monday, April 4th.

I’ve already watched the first two eps and enjoyed them greatly, so I recommend you check it out!

Do you find you experience dramas differently when you have to recap it? How do you balance recap-drama commentary and non (ex. on tumblr) commentary? Have you had trouble w/ time crunches when following the recap schedule (7 hrs 2x a week is a lot of time!)?

I feel like I’m giving an interview or something with all these recapping questions.

Let’s see…

Do you find you experience dramas differently when you have to recap it?

Kinda. I’m forced to pay closer attention to details more than I normally would when I’m just watching it (which is when I discovered that I don’t really like rom-coms when I have to recap them, because I was previously unaware how often I skim over the parts that bore me. You may note that I rarely recap rom-coms any more). I also am more aware of the outside perception of a drama. I self-select and cloister myself with like-minded people here on tumblr, so seeing other people’s reactions to a show is sometimes… fun. Yeah, we’ll say fun.

Although, there have been a few times when I’ve recapped a show I probably would have passed on if left to my own devices, and it turned out to be one of my favorite shows of the year, so that’s always a nice bonus.

How do you balance recap-drama commentary and non (ex. on tumblr) commentary?

I don’t really engage much on here about a show I’m recapping, mostly because I spend so much time and brain-effort on that show the last thing I want to do is talk about it elsewhere. There are some exceptions – I was brought on to CBA late, after I’d already started squeeing about it here. But while I’ll still reblog gifsets, I probably won’t have a lot of text posts about it any more. I also don’t typically go into the tag of a show I’m working on because I like my opinion of the show to be my opinion, y’know? I try not to read anyone else’s reactions until after I’ve submitted the recap.

Have you had trouble w/ time crunches when following the recap schedule (7 hrs 2x a week is a lot of time!)?

It’s really only 7 hours once a week, since a show is often split between two recappers. And YES! It’s hard maintaining a balance sometimes when work gets busy or family stuff happens and then I’m scrambling to meet the deadline. (You’ll note I rarely ever work on the odd-numbered episodes. That’s for a reason.) For anyone who grumbles about why shows aren’t up the same day they air, well, the minions have a life – we have jobs, we go to school, we have family who like to see us and friends we like to hang out with. Oh, and sleep is nice, too.

This is probably late, but I just noticed that you’re recapping come back ahjussi. I’m glad to see your recap again. Just curious. How long does it usually take to recap an episode? Do you recap as you watch or watch it until the end first?

It takes me about seven hours to recap a show from start to finish. Half of that is writing, half of that is screencapping/formatting/editing/etc. It used to take me no less than ten hours when I first started, so, hey, there’s some improvement!

Everyone has their own way of doing things, and I’ve tested out a few ways to figure out what works best for me. I personally like to watch the show on its own first, usually when it first airs, so I can have a feel of the overall episode. It helps to know what I can gloss over or skip when writing it up and what are the main scenes that need most of my attention (as well as start to mentally formulate whatever comments at the end, although those are often subject to change by the time I start writing them just depending on whatever’s left in my brain). This does mean I end up watching an episode at least a couple of times, but I’ve found that’s just easier for me than trying to watch and recap on a first go.

Dramaland Forecast: April 2016

 Previously: JanFeb – Mar

Completed:

  • One More Happy Ending it was far from what the first few episodes promised me it would be, but it was an enjoyable enough fluff bit of a drama, although I only stuck it out for my darling Dong Mi and how charismatic Jung Kyung Ho was as Soo Hyuk. Despite a few bright spots, it’s the kind of drama that I’ll forget ever existed.
  • Signal have I made you all fans of Kim Eun Hee now? Do you see why she’s one of my favorite writers? It wasn’t a perfect show, but it was pretty close, and it definitely redeems my disappointment in Three Days.
  • Neighborhood Hero – the plot was a bit slow, I admit it. But while it may have disappointed others, I enjoyed the laid-back attitude. It did make it feel more like this show would be more at home on jtbc instead of OCN — it was more Yoona’s Street than a slick spy drama (but nowhere close to being as excellent as Yoona’s Street, mind). Then again, I am probably biased because I adored Soo Hyuk’s adorable awkward puppy character and the concept of a place where displaced ex-spies hang-out, and the overall sense of community between all the shop owners in the area. The actual nitty-gritty behind who ruined the original mission and the great conspiracy didn’t interest me quite as much.

Currently watching:

  • Come Back Ahjussi – still loving it.
  • Pied Piper – I’m a couple weeks behind thanks to a busy work schedule, but I still plan to see it through.
  • Vampire Detective – thank goodness it’s only one episode a week, so I might have a chance to keep up. But that first episode was everything I could have wanted, and I’m eager to see how this new take on the vampire mythology plays out.
  • Monster – the first two episodes were high on old-school melodrama, and if I were basing my decision to watch the show just on those, I’d likely pass. But I know this team, I’m obsessed with Park Ki Woong the cast, and the teasers keep promising some cute moments, so I’m holding out for the story to get rolling with the adult versions.
  • Neighborhood Lawyer Jo Deul Hoonce again, legal dramas are not my thing. But I’m hooked on the first two episodes. Plus Park Shin Yang is back on the small screen after six years, so you know it’s going to at least be a pretty good script. (The last time he was in a drama was Sign, which was written by Kim Eun Hee. Just sayin’.)

I’m going to finish this show one day, I swear:

  • Six Flying Dragons  I’ve temporarily stalled out on episode 26, but it’s important to note I’m over halfway!

Skipping/Dropping:

  • I didn’t drop a single show I’d planned to watch! What madness is this?
  • Ms. Temper and Nam Jung Gil – I was only vaguely interested in this, and I haven’t heard anything that will make me squeeze it on my extensive watch list, so I’ll give it a pass.
  • Daebak – I’ve heard good things about it, but I can only handle one sageuk a year, and I think SFD will tide me over for quite some time (should I, uh, ever actually finish it…).

Upcoming dramas of interest:

  • Arbitrarily Fond – finally has an airdate: June 29th! I’m so excited to see Im Joo Eun and Im Joo Hwan back on my screen (and together again!) that I keep forgetting they’re not the actual leads.
  • Entertainer –I wasn’t even aware of this drama until I heard cutie-pie Minhyuk was going to be in it, and being the shameless fangirl that I am, I will primarily check it out just for him. Of course, that’s the worst reason to watch a drama, so I don’t have very high hopes, but I’ll at least try to watch the first few eps.
  • The Good Wife – look at me, willingly adding a legal drama to my list of upcoming dramas that interest me. But I’ve been enjoying the original American drama, which I only started watching once it was revealed that Jeon Do Yeon and Yoo Ji Tae had signed on for the leads. I’m also cool with the rumor of Yoon Kye Sung signing on, since even though I’m not sure what role he’d play (the Will Gardner character, perhaps?), I know he’s talented enough to be able to hold his own with those two power houses. Honestly, I’m excited to hear more about the cast, since I feel like with Jeon Do Yeon as the lead, there should be plenty of seasoned and extremely talented people dying to work on a project with her.
  • Dear My FriendsI’m not sure if there’s really anything to update about this drama, other than it’s settled on an airdate (May 13th). Even though Noh Hee Kyung’s dramas often leave me cold, I’m intrigued by the concept, and, of course, the incredible cast.
  • Police Unit 38 – I do love me some crime procedurals, and I’m curious to see what OCN (aka Only Crime Network) will do with a take on catching rich people attempting to evade their taxes, starring the pretty faces of Seo In Guk and SNSD’s Sooyoung (who I happened to very much enjoy in the tvN drama version of Cyrano Dating Agency). The production team seems promising, at least in terms of action/mystery. Hidden Identity may have been riddled with plot holes, but it was gorgeous to watch, so that director combined with the screenwriter for Vampire Prosecutor definitely have my interest.
  • Jealousy Incarnate – Jo Jung Suk, Gong Hyo Jin, and my queen Lee Mi Sook in a drama from the writer of my beloved Miss Korea? Sign me up!

As always, if a drama isn’t listed here, it means I don’t care about it or there’s nothing new to add since the last time I mentioned it.
